Academic Bowl

Nine seniors from Pecatonica High School brought home a third place finish in the First Annual Mid Northern Senior Academic Bowl held at Rock Valley College on March 7, 1980. The competition was set up in the same way as the old College Bowl TV program. All schools in the Mid Northern Conference except Forreston participated in the all day double elimination tournament.

In July 1980, Rock Valley College received a $1,500 gift from the Honeywell Corporation (Honeywell Sensing & Control), which went into a program to help existing and future RVC students explore career options after their time at RVC.

Make It Rockford

Rock Valley College instructor, Larry Zachary designed a display of Rockford-made products to serve as a learning function for business and economic students back in October of 1980. The display came after the “Make It Rockford” campaign developed by the Rockford Chamber of Commerce. Over 100 widely diverse products were displayed, and many students were surprised to see how many products were manufactured so close to home.

Lasting Impact

Estelle Black was promoted to assistant director of services at the Rockford Public Library in 1980. Black was a member of the Library Association Board of Directors, and used to work at Rock Valley College, while also contributing to many other universities and high schools. Wonder why you recognize her name? Rock Valley College’s library is named after her: Estelle M. Black Library.
