1992 Rock Valley College graduate Joe Coots has taken an interesting route to his career as a stage and screen actor.

Joe CootsWhile playing football at RVC, Coots was encouraged by head coach Ed Gavigan to take a student worker job at Starlight Theatre  building sets for the outdoor summer season.  Joe went on to play football at Benedictine University and upon graduation worked in athletic development and fundraising at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and Northern Illinois University.

While at NIU Joe acted in several Starlight Theatre productions here at RVC including one of the lead roles in the world premiere of the musical “Rebels.”

In 2005, Joe went to New York to try acting full-time, and landed a bit part in Spike Lee’s movie “Inside Man.”

Since then, he’s performed on a number of popular TV shows like “30 Rock,” “Bones,” “Royal Pains”, “Blue Bloods”, “Castle”, “Bones” the series finale of “Rescue Me,” and was a series regular on the second season of “Inside Amy Schumer.”

Joe says he is excited to be back in Chicago performing, close to his family and friends in his hometown of Winnebago.

“Apparently there are two or three busloads from Winnebago coming in of all my mom and all her cronies.” said Coots. “I’m a little nervous but I’m enjoying it.”
