Students can attend RVC via “telepresence”

Posted on Jan 11, 2016

Thanks to a pilot program championed by Rock Valley College Associate Professor of Computers and Information Systems Chuck Konkol, a student who is physically unable to make it to campus will be attending classes via “telepresence” this spring.

So what is “telepresence?”

Telepresence is the use of virtual reality technology, especially for remote control of machinery or for apparent participation in distant events.

Through Destir, RVC’s telepresence robot, student Jim Farone, will be attending courses on campus this spring, despite a debilitating neuromuscular disease.

Farone, and Destir, were recently featured in a story by WREX-TV’s Tori Clark.
